On A Mission Monday

Whew!  A couple of hurdles jumped! My mission last week was more of a personal challenge than anything.  I finally called a babysitter and set up a time to meet with her.  I then met with her and set up two future dates to have her babysit our daughter. Yay!!!!  Everything went better than expected and I did not have a panic attack. Yay again!!! I have to admit it felt good to just take these first few steps.  We'll see how I feel when the actual day arrives.  I'll keep you all posted!


Meanwhile, we finally took our 5 year wedding anniversary pictures that I posted about before.  Here they are:

It feels good to finally get some major (babysitter) and minor (picture) tasks off my to-do list.  As you can see though, these pics are still slightly fuzzy.  We again used our phone camera.  My reason now is that I have misplaced our  regular camera!  I could have sworn it was in my camera yesterday morning before church. Ugh!!! Where, or where could it be?

This week's mission.....find our camera stat.  Also, I have boxes and boxes of pics that are pre-digital camera. Walgreens and Walmart envelopes full of them.  Not in any order or album.  They are all over the place.  Need to get camera back and pictures organized.

On A Mission Monday

Okay, so it's Monday!  Happy Halloween everyone!  Last week, was not really a weekly project by definition.  I gave myself a break from anything new to catch up on things I just kept putting off time and time again.  I actually did finally get some things off my checklist that have been way past due.  Appointments made for doctor and dentist.  Check and check! Left a message for a hair appointment, so real soon that will be in the works too.  I tend to put off things for myself.  Looks like this November I am attempting to get better with that.  Thank goodness!


Anyways, in the spirit of Halloween, I thought my mission for this week could be something spooky.  At least, spooky for me.  Again, it is not really a project this week.  It is more of a challenge. ....(sigh).... I need to find a babysitter.  Ahhhhhh! I know most people do not have a problem with this whatsoever.  Call me a freak, but I have been nervous (to say the least) to do this.  Now, our daughter has stayed with family and close friends a few times before, but we live across country from our family.  Anyways, she has not yet had a typical sitter that we are not related to, etc.  Excuses are long, but mainly I have not needed to get one. Chad and I have been on the same page with this.  We have "date nights" at home after our daughter is asleep or we take her out to sushi with us.  However, she is 2 1/2 years old(!) now.  We are going to test the waters and try for a dinner somewhere without her.  Starting with an afternoon playdate so our daughter can meet the sitter maybe, leading up to us with a dinner away, to hopefully a regular sitter that can be called when needed.


I said earlier "call me a freak", but please don't really...or at least not to my face. Haha!  Everyone has a fear of something.  This is one of mine.  Got any fears you'd like to face this week?  Kind of a spin on Halloween....tackle a fear rather than get all scared.  I know I've probably built this up too much.  It will be fine. Yada, yada, yada.  This week!  I'm putting it out there blog world!  I'm calling a sitter.  Hopefully calling and meeting a sitter.  Yikes!!!

On a Mission Monday

Having this blog has been fun.  It gives me motivation and a deadline to get things done.  However, sometimes it gets difficult because it adds one more daily thing to this crazy thing called life.  Well, two more things actually.  For example, Monday gives me a weekly project to focus on.  So that requires doing the project at some point and taking the time to blog about it.  I am human. Very human. This week I did my mission, but it feels a little half-done to be honest.


I cleaned out everything expired in my fridge. When I open the door, nothing is falling out at me anymore.  So all-in-all, mission accomplished.  Did I clean all shelves and drawers? No.  Did I reorganize to where it looks impressive? No. Have I yet thrown out all past due leftovers? Yes.  Are all containers clean yet? No, they are in the dishwasher though.  Soon. I will wrap up all loose ends soon. In fact, that is what I will be doing right after I finish this post. Here is my  before and after shot.

Not a vast difference from my shots, but I did it.  Believe me, it is actually improved upon greatly! I am now more aware of what I have on hand. I can see how much food we have (to be thankful) and yet don't have (to get myself grocery shopping). We are out of eggs.  We are running low on many other things that we usually have.  If only these things could be self replenishing?!

Next week:  Catch up before committing to any more "projects"! I have been meaning to make myself a doctor and dentist appointment since my birthday. That was in August.  Hair appointment...yep, way over due. Laundry?  Piling up as always.  Why am I so behind?  Who knows?  Reasons include...having a toddler...catching up with relatives long distance...you name it!  It's life, huh?  We do the best we can.  I don't think even "Martha Stewart" can be "Martha Stewart". Anyways, I am going to catch up and report back to you all.  

P.S. Happy to hear from some of you over this past week!  I had three people tell me they were trying a recipe from Tasty Tuesday.  I also got a picture of a canvas painting by someone who said I inspired them to go for it!  So nice to hear!  Have a great week everyone!

On A Mission Monday

Finally! I did a weekly project that was NOT done at the very last minute.  I wanted to paint a canvas to cover a blank wall somewhere in our house.  I got brave, and decided to cover the most noticeable bare wall we had.  The area above our sofa in the front room was a sore spot.  If you were to come in our front door, you would have seen it. This wall had nothing there for almost the past two years. Gasp! I know!  I just couldn't ever find anything I liked, or anything I wanted to pay a lot for. So...I made something myself...and voila! No more blank wall!:)

First I made sure I had the canvas sizes I wanted.

I found these for $30, $40, and $30 at Michael's!  I also got to use my 10% military discount, and luckily I already had almost all of my paint and supplies from my last painting project.  Click here if you would like to see that one.

I'll admit that there was a time when it wasn't looking too good.  It was harder than I expected to match the colors on all three canvases.  I am also not the best at eyeballing a straight line.  On top of that, I really didn't know 100% what I was doing. I did this Thursday night while watching Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice in the background. Chad was on the sofa and could hear my negative comments when it wasn't quite working.  He told me to just not worry about it and said "just relax and create".  Haha! This got me to laugh because hand gestures were included. Kind of a fanning of the hands.  Can't you just picture it?

Anyways, I thought who needs a completely straight line?  It's my canvas. My rules. So I sponged in some lines to give it an imperfect look and sponged on some metallic circles too.....

I know this is not everyone's "style", but it is ours.  I went for neutral colors because everything else in the room is color and I didn't want to be so matchy-matchy.  I do still need to varnish them and touch up some areas that I notice need it, but all in all..... it is just what I wanted!

Next week's mission......talk about "blank".  I don't want to over commit.  I think.. I am going to...... clean out our freezer and fridge.  That's doable, right? Things are crammed in there and falling out at me when I open the door.  Just kidding!  Kind of. ;)

On a Mission Monday

Well, last week's mission is complete.  I removed all clothing that no longer fits Blake out of her closet and her dresser drawers.  That was my main goal and I did accomplish that.  However, I don't have that whole project nailed down. So far this is what our storage looks like that wasn't too embarrassing to post a picture of....

The pink bin we already had.  The gray one is new. The tote on top is too cute to use for just storage purposes, but I wasn't currently using it.  So it holds all reusable shoes (for a possible second child) and baby slings and wraps, etc. until I can get yet another plastic bin. The little box in back we already had too.  It actually holds most of her onesies and dresses age o-6mos.

Every time I go to "keep up" on storing clothes and everything else no longer in use....like bibs, socks, toys, hats, swimsuits, car seat covers, shoes, boots, mittens, bottles, baby bath stuff, swings, jumpers, blah blah blah and a million other different little baby thingies....I wonder how do other people do this?  I know I can let things go. This is my own fault.  If I'd keep up the day we are done with something, this would not seem so overwhelming. Where do people keep all this stuff though?! Maybe it is harder in between children. If I knew for 100% that we would not being having another daughter, all things pink could go to our niece or we could sell it. Maybe it's just this time in our lives. I guess we just deal with it until we truly no longer need it.

Anyways, nothing too exciting.  I am not sorting through sizes anymore though.  If I had some really cool new method or idea for storing kids items, I would show you.  Mainly it is just going into storage bins.  I sure wish houses out here in the West had basements though!  I need to rearrange yet another closet in a spare bedroom to fit these into.

Oh, we did get Sneaker back! Yay!  Here are the before and after pictures of her. The real difference is in how much softer she feels. That and the fact her head isn't falling off.  :)

Next week's mission: I really need to work in that spare bedroom and get all loose ends tied up with Blake's old clothes.  I feel like that makes for a boring blog though.  I just did a before and after of my closet. I won't bore you all with another one.  We all have closets to clean, huh?  Hmmm... I think I'm going to get out my paints again and put a canvas somewhere on a bare wall. Not entirely sure my plan yet on that, but I'll let you know how it goes next Monday.

On a Mission Monday

Well, I couldn't keep a secret from Chad for long.  He ended up finding out about last week's "secret mission" I had for him after all.  He took like 3 guesses (all incorrect ones) and then I caved and told him.  I finally took his old teddy bear, Sneaker, in to be repaired.  To be absolutely clear, Chad does not still sleep with his childhood teddy bear or anything like that.  Haha!  He does still have it though.  It just happened to be something he hung on to over the years.

Anyways, he received this special bear for his 3rd birthday.  Her name is Sneaker because every night he would take her to bed with him, and she would inevitably end up on the floor or sneak away from him sometime in the night.  This bear has been stored in a closet for awhile and has seen better days.  Our daughter is now almost 2 1/2 years old. So I thought I'd fix up ole' Sneaker a bit and let her receive some love from another little family member.


Blake and I took her to "the teddy bear doctor" (a.k.a. the dry cleaners) last week to see if they could help us out.  They were more than happy to mend her wounds and clean her up.  We were told Sneaker would be ready for pick up this morning, but when we went to get her, they said they will need a couple more days.  Apparently, whenever they receive teddy bears, they hand wash them and they just haven't gotten to it. 


So Sneakers's transformation is not yet complete.  Blake is very concerned about daddy's teddy bear though, and I have assured her that Sneaker is in good hands.  Not that you all are on the edge of your seats, but I will post an "after" pick once we get her back. :)


It was kind of nice to have a Monday mission being completed by someone other than myself.  I was able to get other stuff done around here.  I still have my old closet clothes to get rid of, but luckily there are many charities around here that offer pick up from your front door.  I'm just waiting for the next flyer that advertises the next date, and out the front door these clothes will go.


This week's mission: Get all of the clothes that no longer fit Blake into storage bins.  
She is growing up too quickly.  I am tired of sorting through several sizes trying to find what will and what won't fit her.  This is something that has been on my to-do list for too long.  I'm over it.

On A Mission Monday

Well, I did it.  Whew!  I have to say it feels good to be in a better place...or a better closet that is.  I am writing to you from it now because I could just live in here.  Just kidding!  The computer would not reach.  I no longer have a bad feeling when I walk into it though.  No more nagging thought of "how bad am I going to let this get?" kind of thing.


We are a military family meaning we move every couple of years.  I have often heard other families say it's great to move at times because it forces you to stay organized.  I've heard you have to stay on top of it, stuff like that.  Well no, you don't really have to do anything.  Although, I do now I agree you should.  The mountain I just climbed will not have to be climbed again. 


Anyways, different moves means different houses.  I love the closet in this particular house because of it's size.  It is a closet/extra storage room for us, and I had been treating it as such.  In fact, I put it off last when unpacking and just never got to a lot of it.  Embarrassing how many things I had stowed away and kept in those boxes.  If I wanted something just out of the way, into my closet it went.  Blah, blah, blah though.  Here are some before and afters!:)

I did have a little fun doing this.  I found clothes that I couldn't believe I used to wear.  Some that were super cute, some that had me asking what-was-I-thinking, and all different sizes mixed into those categories. I also found a $15 Starbucks gift card and $6.80 to Kohl's.  It was a nice tip!:)  


My favorite find was this old school pic of Chad and I.  This picture was taken four years before we started dating.  We knew each other back in college while we worked at the same part time job.  I realize I look a little like the joker here with that HUGE smile and red lipstick.  Oh well, it's a keeper.  The photo and the guy.  Little did we know then that we'd be married and moving around from house to house together.  I must say he is wonderful, and...thanks again sweetie for hanging my new jewelry boards this morning!  I love you Chad!:)

Next week's mission:  Take it easy!  No. I have loose ends to tie up with this.  Getting those old clothes out of the house.  I'm going to check out what places would be best to get them to.  Plus, I have a TON of laundry now.  There will still be a mission, but it is a surprise for Chad and he reads this.  So it is a top secret mission this week, but I'll show you next Monday!

On a Mission Monday

Okay, so this is my sixth week of blogging with my Monday Missions.  I shout out a project for the week on Monday, and by next Monday I share with you what I did.  Well, this was my first week to not even start my mission.  Ahhh.  Remember how I said cleaning out my closet was a bit like climbing Mt. Everest to me? Well, I didn't even put one foot in front of the other for this climb.  I didn't even buy the gear to prepare for this climb.  I did nothing.  There it is...complete honesty.  I kept putting it off for one reason or another, and  then surprise surprise, it was not a completed mission.  I think it falls into a category that boils down to this saying:

Yes, cleaning my closet just did not seem that important to me this week.  I don't want to just give up though.  I could list all my excuses for not doing it, but I won't ramble on and on.  About an hour ago, I had a toddler who was refusing to take a nap.  I tried many techniques to get her down.  We did several potty breaks.  We pretended her stuffed animals were the ones who needed a nap.  Finally, I laid down on the floor next to her, and it was lights out.  Luckily, it was lights out for her and not me.  Believe me, I struggled with not passing out myself!  All in all though, she is down.  So today I have a sleeping toddler and a messy closet. Hopefully next week I will have a clean closet and (pause) I'd like to keep the toddler napping if possible. :)


So this week's mission: to clean out my freaking closet.  I can do this.  I will not blow it two weeks in a row. So that's all for today.  I'm off to get it started!  Have a great week everyone!

On A Mission Monday

Monday, Monday....so we meet again. Last week's mission was to "spruce" up Blake's room.  I was kind of chicken by describing it this way because I actually had one particular thing in mind....to lengthen her curtains.  Why did I not just say this?  I think because I was unsure if I would do it and like it.  Well, the mission was completed so I should have just said it in the first place!

Okay, so I bought her curtains about a year and a half ago.  I found some that claimed to be room darkening (they dim it I guess) and they happen to be just the perfect shade of pink.  The length was not good, but I wasn't too bothered by them so they stayed.  However, all too often I would think to myself...those curtains are too short.  Well, jump forward to today and I made them longer.  I guess I could have just bought new ones, but I wanted the fun of seeing if I could make the curtains we already have still work.

After googling several different sites for ideas, I found I was not alone.  Many people buy too short of curtains and "fix" them.  You can add fabric and/or ribbons to the bottom, lower your curtain rod, get those curtain clips if you need just a few inches, or even split your curtain's fabric and add fabric in the middle.  Who knew?  Well, most sites called for a sewing machine.  Some said you could use iron bonded tape or a glue gun.  The glue gun sounded easiest to me.

So off to Walmart I went last night (procrastinator) to get some fabric to add to the curtains.  The Walmart here in our town no longer sells fabric!  Waa waa.  There is not even another craft store in this town that does.  Double waa waa.  I was going to give up, but then I thought I wonder if there is anything else that might work....a blanket I could cut up, some sheets, some towels (haha), a tablecloth......that is when I found this:

This was my answer!  Perfect!  The top portion of the pic, the valance, was just the right length, color, and fabric that I was looking for.  Voila!  Yet also, duh! Window treatments were just the right weight and the top and bottom of this was hemmed.  So I picked up two for $10 total. Then I got a mini glue gun for $5.97 and 100 mini glue sticks also for $5.97 (of which I think I used 4).  Grand total of $21.94 and I have new curtains I love.

I was so excited to get to it that I forgot to take a "before" pic.  Found these to give you an idea of how short they were.

Last week when she wanted to see out her window.

So there was a gap of 7" that I wanted to cover up.  The valance is 16".  So measuring up 8" from the bottom I simply hot glued carefully the valance to the curtain.  One valance to each individual panel. I glued just along some dashes I marked at the 8"up line.  The valance was too wide on either side so I just wrapped the extra fabric back and hot glued it to the back of the curtain.  No scissors even required.

I was going to add some polka dotted ribbon along the bottom and top of the curtain, but then decided against it.  I liked it just how it was.  Here are some "after" pics.....

So another Monday Mission complete! They actually serve their purpose just fine and I like how they look.  Surely hot glue doesn't make for the highest quality, but they don't have to last us forever either.  Okay, so I'm feeling guilty about tiptoeing around announcing my last week's mission.  So this week I'm going to get brave.  Sigh.  I need to clean out my closet.  My bedroom closet.  It's BAD.  A real mess.  It feels like I am setting out to climb Mt. Everest.  Although if I had to do that, I'd prefer to just clean out my closet.  My husband has fallen over now at this part of my blog if he read all the way to the end.  Haha!  Wish me luck and happy Monday!:)

On A Mission Monday

Baby book is done!  Well, 98% done to be exact.  I have a few paragraphs to fill in...a page "about mommy" and "about daddy", and some descriptions of birthday parties, etc.  Not a biggie though.  I will probably have that done tonight.  Honestly, if I wouldn't have this blog and giving myself a true deadline to just get it done, I'm not sure if I ever would have.  I found once I forced myself to sit down and do it, I got into it.  I am more than 100% happy with it.  It may have taken me a while, but it wasn't just slopped together.  I'd share more pics of its pages, but there's such personal info that I get a little nervous to have it out there on the Internet.  So another Monday Mission complete!

On A Mission Monday

The Baby Book...Part One.

In case you are unfamiliar with my "On a Mission Mondays",  I pick one little project to complete by the next Monday and then I share it on here.  So last Monday, my "little" project was to get caught up on my daughter's baby book.  She's two.  Yep, I had fallen quite behind.  Lots of memos saved, pictures to be put in...I have it all...just not in the book.  Well, this week I'd say my mission was 90% completed.  I had two choices on this one..... fess up and admit that I did not complete it, or lie and act like I did.  I was a little tempted to do the second, but not really.  That would defeat the purpose of my Monday blog.  I feel less guilty by just telling the truth too. Believe me, I already have enough mom guilt that I have put the whole thing off for this long.

It is taking me "Baby Steps" to complete this book!

The good thing is that I did jump in and it will be done this week.  Without a doubt, this week I will be able to close it and say it is up-to-date.  The baby book I purchased was one I chose before I had an actual baby.  I wanted one that was fairly plain so I could decorate it and do as I wanted with it.  Make it unique, I thought.  Well, again it was before baby.  I don't think I realized how much time and energy a child requires.  Most of the first year I was sleep deprived and not able to do all that I wanted with her book.  Lesson learned.  Although, with (hopefully) our next child I will want to do the same.  So the major lesson learned is to keep up with milestones as they occur.  This way I won't be blogging excuses for why I am behind!:)

One thing I added that I love is this collage of all of Blake's favorite books over the past couple of years.  It is front and back.  I was able to fit about 15 or so on each side, and I may just add more books in or add another page.  All of these books make me smile when I think of how she reacted to each one.  I smile when I think of how she learned to turn the pages, what she called certain characters as she began to talk, her pointing and saying "what's that?", and how they often saved my sanity while in the car or on a shopping trip.  I scanned each one into our computer then just adjusted their sizes.

On A Mission Monday

What have I gotten myself into?  This was probably one of my first thoughts as I rolled out of bed this morning.  That's right.  This morning I got up to clean out and reorganize the kitchen desk that I said I would have done by today.  Well, procrastinator I may be, but "Monday Mission" accomplished!  Never would I have ever thought the random stuff that I have shoved into these cabinets would be viewed on the freaking Internet, nor that I would be the one posting them.  Yet, here they are...before and after shots of my messy kitchen desk/storage area......

So I threw out what was just random junk...receipts, expired coupons, things I kept for some reason that I will never need, etc.  I made the drawer that our daughter can open to now be free of scissors, eyeball poking pens, dangerous screwdrivers.  We were soooo toddler proofed.  The drawer still has a place for coins and keys, but all weapons have been removed.  Mainly there are just some coloring books in there now and stuff to keep her busy while I am cooking dinner.  The top cabinets no longer give me a headache when I open them.  Ahh, yes, this is so much better.....

How can I throw out so much, and still have so much?

New Monday Mission.....Okay so for this week, maybe I can start it before it's due date.  One thing that has been put off time and time again is updating Blake's baby book.  I need to turn empty pages into memories preserved.  I have many milestones jotted down on scraps of paper and in my phone, but they need to get in the book!  I keep waiting for who knows what.  Creative energy.  A big slot of time.  Well, I saw something recently that it so true.... "Finished is Better than Perfect".  Baby book here I come!:)

On a Mission Monday

Hello!  Okay, so I'm back to the blogging world!  So often I can't figure out my direction with my blog.  Do I just write about anything random I think of, do I inform you of something, and/or do I just post pics of what we've been up to?  I realize I can do whatever I want, but I need something to keep me focused and keep my wheels spinning.  So....new format.  I'm sticking to a different theme for each day of the week.  I've seen other people do this, and now I'm going to give it a whirl too. Welcome to today.  It's On a Mission Monday.

I feel like a have a bazillion little projects around the house or just your basic "to-do's" that I seem to never get to.  I spend a lot of time thinking about what I need to get done, and feel like I never just get it done already!  So today I'll share with you something I just recently completed.  Then I'm going to shout out my new mission for the week, and next Monday I'll have to own up to if I got it done and show you something from it.  Don't worry, it's not like you'll see a "before and after" of toilet cleaning or anything.  Hopefully it's something to inspire you and give you ideas, but most importantly for me, I'll be getting it done.  I can put off lots on my own.  I feel it'll be extra incentive for me to be held accountable by my own blog.  Wow...it'll be setting a goal in writing and then doing it.  Not my typical style people. :)

Okay, so I used to pass by this big bare wall A LOT and think I should paint something there.....

So I did!

I went to Michael's one morning and bought a $40 canvas.  I chose some acrylic paint in colors I thought I'd like.  I really didn't know anything about brushes, foam things, or sponges so I just picked out an assortment.  

Then I put it down flat on the kitchen island and went to town during Blake's nap that afternoon. I knew if I screwed up, no one would even know.  I thought if it's that bad, I'll just paint over it or toss it.  No pressure.  I actually had so much fun doing this.  Turned on Pandora and listened to some good music, and I was actually happy with the way it turned out.

Ta da!  I'm not claiming to be a pro, but I like it!

This week's mission:  Organizing and cleaning out this messy kitchen desk area we have.  Chad will be happy about this one because the junk drawer drives him bonkers, and I discovered an important piece of "missing" mail on the desk this morning.  This week it will transform into something more organized and useful.  At least I hope so, or I'll have to tell you all what a slacker I can be!
